Panels Considering Registering a Child for Permanence
Foster carers will be invited to attend panels where a child is being presented as being in need of permanent substitute family care.
It is important for the panel to have as full and clear a picture of the child as possible. As the person living with the child 24 hours a day, the carer is particularly well placed to provide information about the way that the child functions within a family.
The sort of questions the panel are likely to ask include:
- what the child is like to live with;
- the impact of the child on other members of the family;
- the child's routines;
- the child's interests and talents;
- the child's capacity to make and sustain friendships and
- the nature of the attachments the child has to significant people in his or her life.
The panel may also ask what the carer's views are about the child needs in relation to a future family.
