Angus Family Based Respite Care
Family Based Respite Care is for children of all ages who may have some physical and/or learning disability. These children live most of the year with their own family. Sometimes families need some respite to help them recharge their batteries. These children need short regular breaks away from home and families need to be able to plan for respite. In these circumstances respite can be sharing the child's care with another family.
Some children will need a lot of physical care, feeding, bathing, dressing and help with walking. Some may have challenging behaviour which can be difficult to manage.
Children need carers who have patience, understanding, time and sense of humour. Carers need to remember that the family is the main carer and that they all work together. Angus Family Based Respite Carers do not need specialist qualifications and come from all types of backgrounds. They need to be patient, have a caring approach, commitment, a sense of humour, enjoy a challenge and have a positive view of disability.
Angus Family Based Respite Carers may be one to one carers and have only one child and family they work with or they may be linked to more than one child and family. Angus Family Based Respite Carers receive initial preparation and training as well as ongoing support from specialist social workers at the Strathmore Avenue Resource Centre, in Forfar. They also receive a package of financial support that covers the expenses involved.
